Open on a guy getting chased by a car. Apparently it's a ghost car. Ghost car splats guy.Sam and Dean investigate. Sammy's still hearing voices. And he thinks Dean let Amy go...not so much. God, Sam needs a haircut...
"License to kill" - really Dean, really?
Sam goes to check out AA, and Dean checks out a flower shop, which leads to a graveyard where the dead guy sent flowers once a month. The grave belongs to a little girl who was killed when a neighbor hit her with their car. Maybe our dead guy? Probably. But a salt and burn this early would just be too easy...
Now there's a guy being chased by a German shepherd. Ghost dog. Indiscriminate blood spatter. What the hell is going on?
AD: "In Time" - Interesting concept. It's got Matt Bomer, which is probably enough to get me to see it ;)
Second dead guy ran dog fights. Sound like poetic justice to anyone else? Obligatory Michael Vick reference. Apparently dead guy 2 volunteered at an animal shelter...guess that didn't help.
Looks like this red dirt just keeps showing up. The boys go to check out the apple farm where it came from. A random guy runs out in front of the Impala. Logically, Sam and Dean bring him back to their motel to get his story, which he claims is unbelievable. Sounds like their kind of thing.
Guy says he was put on trial for robbing a liquor store and killing the owner and his wife. He was just released from prison, but was also just put on trial. He draws out to some symbols he saw in a barn on the apple farm. These "trials" seem to have something to do with a local bar.
Dean says the case isn't as clear-cut as it seemed before. All the "victims" have less than sparkly clean pasts. And now Dean's going off to probably get drunk. Boy's got a problem...
Sam wants to go back to the barn where the trial took place. The guy refuses. Sam leaves him in a nice little salt circle. Why do I feel like that's not going to work?
Cut to Dean in the bar. Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Down South Jukin'" plays in the background. Dean's throwing back doubles like there's no tomorrow. That's gotta be good for his liver...And he's spilling his guts to the pretty blonde bartender. There's a shady-looking guy in a baseball cap at the end of the bar. Could be nothing, but probably isn't.
Sam investigates the barn with the red dirt. Looks like a regular old barn to me. Bobby calls; the symbols are Egyptian. They reference the god Osiris, who plays judge, jury, and executioner for those who feel guilty. Hmm, who do we know that's carrying around massive amounts of guilt? Oh right, Dean!
Oh my God. Dean's giving himself a pep talk. And he just got snatched, by Osiris I assume.
(My mom just asked me what I was tweeting. Had to explain that it was actually my blog. Then I had to explain what a blog is...)
Back to Sam. No, Dean's not loaded, he's been kidnapped.
Cut to that guy from before, watching TV in the motel room. TV goes out, lights start to flicker. Stay in the circle, dammit! Oh look, the ghosts of the liquor store owner and his wife. Yup, ghost just shot that guy in the face...
Brief moment with Sam and the bartender. Sam found red dirt...
And now court is in session, the honorable judge Osiris presiding. Sam wants to act as Dean's attorney. He was pre-law...PRE. Oh Sammy, nice try with the early objection. He watches The Good Wife?! Wow. I really don't think you want to be in contempt in this guy's court. Oh jeez, he just called Jo's ghost to the stand. This is not gonna be pretty...
Lots of awkward personal questions, bringing Jo's feelings for Dean into it. At least she's trying to help Dean out some. Osiris is trying to say that Jo never would have died if she hadn't met Dean. Debatable. She always had a way of finding trouble.
Lawyer!Sam is on cross. Bringing up the daddy issues, which Jo definitely also had. Osiris cuts off Sam's cross mid-question. What a dick. Next witness: Sam?! Oh wow, flashback from the first episode! Osiris is trying to make everything that ever happened to anyone ever Dean's fault. Okay, so maybe some of it was. But not all of it! Yellow Eyes would have killed Jess either way.
Wait. How is Osiris not deciding anything? Oh, so it's about how Dean feels about all this. C'mon Dean, you can believe you're innocent! No, he probably can't...He's been punishing himself for years.
Lawyer!Sam calls Dean as a witness. If anyone can help, it's Sam! He's making some good points here: Dean didn't know Jess would die, he didn't kill Jo, and it's not actually Dean's fault!
Oh man, he's screwed if Osiris calls Amy. That is definitely where the guilt comes in. But I think it's just guilt about lying to Sam.
GUILTY?! SHIT!!! But it's not like I didn't really see that coming...
Yeah boys, that guy from before is dead. He should've stayed in the circle...that's, what, rule #1?
Mom just made a good point: if Dean tells Sam about Amy, he won't feel guilty anymore.
Bobby's got a way to put Osiris down? Cool! But, where are the boys going to get a ram's horn? Is there a zoo nearby? They are NOT going to rob a synagogue! They are...well, Sam is. And that leaves Dean to deal with Ghost!Jo. Bring on the guilt.
Cut to Sammy robbing a synagogue. "I'm guessing you're not here for bar mitzvah lessons?" Good line haha
And Osiris is scouting for another victim...
Dean and Jo are having a moment. Dean definitely thinks this was all his fault. Jo disagrees. I almost didn't notice that she's wearing the same outfit as when she died. I think the jacket looks a little different though.
Sammy's got the ram's horn. Now he just has to find Osiris.
Oh man, don't blow the motel up Jo! That's not even how she died! She died right before the bomb went off; Ellen blew the hardware store up! And there goes the salt circle...this is not good.
And there's Sammy with the last-second save! YES!!!
Aww, tender moment. And Jo's gone. Dean should probably turn the gas off...
Oooh, a brotherly moment? I'm intrigued. Will Dean tell Sam about Amy? Nah, instead we'll just talk about Lawyer!Sam, who was actually pretty good. Quick question about the "final witness", but even quicker deflection by Dean. So apparently Sam just doesn't feel guilty anymore. Looks like that might be a good way to go through life, especially if you could end up getting judged by an Egyptian god...
My mom and I both thought Dean littered for a second there, but there was a trash can. It's all good.
Final thoughts: I'll never complain about a Dean-centric episode, and this was a good one! We took a good, hard look into Dean's head (or heart, pick your favorite), and it's a pretty dark place. I think I would feel guilty if all that stuff had gone down on my watch, so I totally understand that he does. It does worry me that Sammy doesn't seem to feel guilty about things anymore; didn't he get his soul back last season? Either way, I hope we get plenty of insight into the boys this season! Also: Jared REALLY needs a freakin' haircut!
Next week: Spike and Cordy! Buffy fans, this one's for you! Looks like Charisma will be playing a witch. This should be interesting...
